Indians have reacted with fury to President Barack Obama's tough stance against BP , accusing the US of double standards over industrial accidents after the failure to convict Americans involved in the Bhopal disaster of 1984 or to obtain what many view as adequate compensation for victims.

The Pioneer and Hindustan newspapers ran headlines last week repeating the charge that the US reaction to the Gulf Coast disaster, which has killed 11 people, and to Bhopal , where at least 15,000 died as a result of exposure to toxic gases leaking from a US-owned pesticide plant, was evidence of double standards. One reason for the anger lies in the timing of the Obama's address to the American nation on the oil spill , which came a week after the first verdicts in a criminal trial related to the Bhopal disaster.

A crucial point of the controversy over the Bhopal gas tragedy verdict has been the exit route offered to Anderson, who was the American CEO of Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) in 1984 when a gas leak from the company's plant choked Bhopal. Anderson's departure from Bhopal was not a stealthy one. He flew out on December 7, hours after landing in Bhopal, on the official plane of the then Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Arjun Singh.  He then stopped in Delhi before leaving the country. But the verdict delivered last week, which offered a nano-punishment to seven Carbide executives, all of them Indian, has led to a new public anger pivoted on why Anderson has never faced trial.

WASHINGTON: An Indian-American lad of 12 symbolically attempts to serve summons to Warren Anderson, the so-called Butcher of Bhopal, in New York. An American student who has already spent five years of her school life campaigning for justice for the victims of Bhopal, joins a protest demonstration before the Indian Embassy in Washington DC. While the Bhopal issue is being debated vigorously in India following a widely-criticized court verdict, activists in America have found new voice because of a combination of developments: a growing chorus in the US for greater corporate accountability; the British Petroleum oil spill that has brought environment cause to the front burner; and a belief that, somehow, President Obama and his administration may be inclined to revisit the great tragedy that befell the people of Bhopal. On a steamy Monday in the US capital, a motley group of activists demonstrated around a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in front of the Indian Embassy. Drawing comparison to the huge liabilities being slapped on BP in the US, they demanded the Indian government pursue the prospect of forcing Dow Chemicals, which bought Union Carbide subsequent to the December 1984 disaster, to accept liability. They also sought ''appropriate sentencing'' for the Indian accused, and the extradition of Warren Anderson, who was the Union Carbide CEO when the disaster took place.

The World Cup tournament is here and after 70 years of its inception. It is now time for Africa to host the world. South Africa’s hosting of this international soccer fiesta did not come to them on a silver platter. Thanks to personalities like Nelson Mandela, Sepp Blatter and a few others who believe in the African. The hosting of the World Cup in Africa was met with stiff opposition from some nations. The reason for their opposition was their perception about Africa. For quite some time now, South Africa has been in the news for the wrong reasons. Most pessimists thought it was not a safe place to host such a big event in the face of the high crime rate coupled with xenophobic tendencies, the high prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS and lack of security.

The support and prayers of the rest of the African continent and some few friends in the other continent saw South Africa through and the rest is history now. Days before the opening ceremony, some skeptics were still not comfortable with this soccer fiesta taking place in Africa. The musical show and grand opening ceremony which was witnessed by some African leaders and a host of other dignitaries left a lasting impression on the world. It also put the critics to sleep and made Africa’s case of hosting the world a dream-come-true. Our brothers and sisters from South Africa have shown the rest of the world what they are made of. The performances at the opening ceremony were excellent and the entire programme was a grand success. The only blot on the entire program was the death of a great-grand-daughter of the Madiba man Nelson Mandela. The unfortunate death of the 13-year-old girl made it impossible for one of the best leaders that Africa has had after Dr. Kwame Nkrumah to witness what he and others manage to make happen. May the soul of that little girl rest in peace. I am sure just as his great-grandpa sacrificed his life for the end of apartheid in South Africa, so did she lose her life to make the dream of South Africa and Africa as a whole come true. It's very unfortunate a life was lost in the quest to make it happen in Africa. I hope the rest of the world learns a lesson from this tragedy and ensures that even in our quest to celebrate our success in any endeavour we do not over-do it or engage in certain acts that make us to endure pain and sad memories for the rest of our lives.

And why did Sorabjee climb down after reading the opinion of US law firm Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Hand Chartered and give a subsequent opinion on August 6, 2001, arguing about the futility of India seeking Anderson's extradition.

Visit http://geicoinsuranceproducts.wordpress.com/ for GEICO Insurance Products News / Reviews.

It was a little surprising since it was Sorabjee who had assiduously argued for enhancement of the settlement agreed upon in 1989. The Supreme Court, after a review, increased it to $470 million. Sorabjee had also persuaded the apex court not to erase the criminal liability of the accused because of the settlement for compensation. Speaking to TOI from London, Sorabjee said he was not against the government pursuing extradition. "I had given the opinion on the basis of facts and evidence in the case and had never told the government not to pursue the case," Sorabjee said and agreed that his efforts to maximise the compensation settlement and the US authorities' track record deterred him from giving an opinion to the government to go full throttle to seek Anderson's extradition.

The subtle message coming from the US on the Bhopal gas tragedy is “case closed”. The muffled Indian response, driven by local outrage over the weak two-year prison terms awarded to Union Carbide executives by a Bhopal court on Monday, is that the case is still open.

But there was no whiff of “procurement” from the US side, which remained politely non-committal about the extradition of Anderson, arguably India’s most-wanted man. When journalists asked state department spokesman PJ Crowley if the US would fight against the 90-year-old’s extradition, all they received was stony silence. What is not confidential (and a shame) is that in 1992, Anderson was declared a fugitive by the Bhopal court for failing to appear for hearings. In July, 2009, an arrest warrant was issued for him after an appeal by a victims’ group. It took the Indian government 19 years to move a formal request for his extradition.

BP said it captured 10,500 barrels of oil from its leaking well yesterday, up from 6,077 barrels in the previous 24-hour ending at midnight June 4.
