Identifying the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) as an organisation with global reach, a senior U.S. counter-terrorism official said on Thursday that the fact that it has a social welfare wing made no difference to its status as a terrorist organisation.

Speaking at a conference here, U.S. Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Daniel Benjamin said the global community must act against the LeT, lest it should fill the gap left by al-Qaeda. His observation comes two days after the LeT rejected India-Pakistan talks and reiterated its belief in jihad to liberate Jammu and Kashmir at a rally organised near the India-Pakistan border.

His observation comes two days after the LeT rejected India-Pakistan talks and reiterated its belief in jihad to liberate Jammu and Kashmir at a rally organised near the India-Pakistan border. “One of the greatest obstacles is the increase in terrorist activity due to the emergence of transnational elements. Nowhere are they as strong as in the Middle East and South Asia. We must be able to disrupt those links,” Mr. Benjamin said. That was why the Obama administration was working on resolving the Arab-Israel and other regional conflicts, because extremists were using these to radicalise people.

In what could potentially lead India to up its ante vis-a-vis the US over Headley, senior government functionaries have concluded after consultations with solicitor-general Gopal Subramaniam that Headley’s plea agreement, under which he will be spared death sentence and extradition to India, conflicts with the extradition and mutual legal assistance treaties between the two countries.

Under the plea agreement, Headley aka Daood Gilani pleaded guilty on 12 counts — nine of them related to the terror attack on Mumbai — in exchange for a promise that he would not be given death sentence or extradited to India.

I thought the wicket was a bit on the slow side.” Dhoni said the target could have been reached, had Chennai made a good start. “There's no reason why we couldn't have got there, with guys like Matthew Hayden and Suresh Raina, who are the big-hitters in the top order, and later Justin Kemp and Albie Morkel.” Asked if he might, in hindsight, have tried a few more overs of spin from someone like Raina, considering the turn the wicket was affording, he said that he had not use the part-timer due to the size of the boundaries. “I could have used him, but he's not a really big turner of the ball, and this isn't a very big ground,” he said.

Deepak, who was arrested here on Tuesday, is also reported to have said the Trinamool Congress had provided Maoists with arms and that they, in turn, gave supporters of the party arms training during the movement in Nandigram. It was the Maoists’ intention to gain a foothold in the Nandigram area with Trinamool help in the course of the agitation, led by the party in 2007 against alleged moves by the State government to acquire land for the setting up a chemical hub there.

The United States has appreciated the legislation undertaken by Indian government to check money laundering cases, especially with regard to the religious charities receiving foreign money, and asked it to extend this regulation into fields like real estate and accountancy.

The Indian Government amended the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in order to strengthen its anti—money laundering/combating the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) regime, the Obama Administration in its report ‘International Narcotics Control Strategy Report Volume II Money Laundering and Financial Crimes’ said. The 238-page report, released on Monday at the Foggy Bottom headquarters of the State Department, said India “should extend the PMLA to dealers in precious stones and metals; real estate agents; lawyers, notaries and other independent legal professionals; and accountants.” Further tax reform, loosening of currency controls and facilitating the development of money transfer services should enhance the availability of legal alternatives to hawala and reduce money laundering/terrorist financing (ML/TF) vulnerabilities.

“Poori nigahen Pakistani goal par.” The announcer at the Dhyan Chand National Stadium is telling us that all eyes are focused on the Pakistani goal during a penalty-corner sequence! Of course, all eyes are focussed on that goal; we know that already. “Aur is tarah Pakistan ko ek aur penalty corner.” Yes, we know that also, that Pakistan has gained one more penalty-corner.

This is essentially the kind of radio commentary we often listen to during live television coverage of India's events at the Olympic Games. The meaningless and embarrassing announcements during the key India-Pakistan pool match at the World Cup hockey tournament on Sunday night must have robbed of some fun for a near-capacity crowd that otherwise enjoyed a rare, authoritative Indian triumph over its arch-rival at home. When a public address system at a stadium is used to convey happenings that the spectators are already witnessing, it can only be some sort of an amusement if not a distraction.

Posted On Sunday, February 28, 2010 America has, in clear terms told Pakistan that it would not enter into any nuclear agreement as it had entered with India or supply any nuclear equipment as well. It would give only that help to Pakistan which would help to fight them against the taliban and other terrorists. At the same time the US is also keeping a close watch as to where and how Pakistan is using the aid being given to it. America wants to withdraw its troops from Afghanistan once the taliban elements are rooted out both from Pakistan and Afghanistan.

In this context the US is worried that a war should not break out on the issue of terrorism between India and Pakistan thereby benefiting the taliban and Al Qaeda elements further. The Mumbai attack has created a host of problems for India. If in future too such attacks recur, then there would be a situation of fear and the government would have to spend huge funds on security arrangements.
