NEW DELHI: Social activist Anna Hazare has termed the US "interference" in the "internal matters" of the country as "unfortunate". In a letter to the PM on the ongoing tussle between the Jan Lokpal proponents and the government for a suitable venue for his indefinite fast from August 16, he held the "dictatorial attitude" of the UPA government responsible for the gratuitous advice from the US on handling democratic stirs.

Hazare was referring to a statement by US state department spokesperson Victoria Nuland on Thursday where she had said her country counted on India to "exercise appropriate democratic restraint in the way it deals with peaceful protests".

Significantly, Nuland spoke only in response to a question and in general terms, stressing that India is a democracy. The spokesperson had been asked about Hazare's impending fast on the demand for complete withdrawal of the government's Lokpal Bill and introduction in Parliament of the draft prepared by Team Anna.
