"The King's Speech," dramatizing British monarch George VI's struggle to vanquish a crippling stammer, leads the 83rd annual Oscars with 12 nominations and is favored to win best picture.

Police commissioner Shankar M Bidari scored a bull’s eye when he told foreign media persons that these are the dynamics in Bangalore (read India) that Europeans would not understand. But he was simply defending the actions of his men —lathi-charge and all — that led to dozen sustaining injuries near Chinnaswamy Stadium on Thursday. The crowds had gathered all through Wednesday night to seek tickets on Thursday morning for today’s India-England ICC World cup match. And they were in for a shock when they found out that only 7,000 were on sale, and that too, not all of them were actually sold.

The United States shuttered its Embassy in Tripoli after evacuating its diplomats and most U.S. citizens in Libya, and announced it had begun imposing sanctions on Gadhafi's regime. LOS ANGELES – Playing real-life people on film is one of the trickier acting challenges, a feat that the Academy Awards has recognized more than 15 times over the past decade. They're expected to do it again at Sunday's ceremony, with the real-world tales "The King's Speech," "The Social Network," "The Fighter" and "127 Hours" up for multiple Oscars.

Portraying a nonfictional character isn't a surefire way to win an Oscar, but it sure seems to help an actor's chances. James Franco, who is serving double duty as the show's co-host and a best actor nominee for "127 Hours," felt just as much pressure to portray real-life mountain climber Aron Ralston as he did to become a fictional heroin addict named Joey.

It was a violence-tinged and anti-Semitic radio rant that helped push him over the edge and, finally, forced CBS and Warner Bros. Television to take action. Whether he's gone far enough to sink the series and, possibly, his career as one of TV's highest-paid actors remained unclear. Sheen's rambling interview Thursday with host Alex Jones was reminiscent of Mel Gibson's tirade during a 2006 traffic stop — but Sheen knew his remarks were public.

NEW YORK – Forest Whitaker is one terrific actor. From his start two decades ago in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," he has logged powerful performances in such films as "Platoon," "Bird," "The Crying Game" and "Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai," and in a season-long arc of the acclaimed TV drama "The Shield." For his portrayal of mad Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in 2006's "The Last King of Scotland," he won an Oscar for best actor.

In "Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior" (which premiered to a hit-size audience last week and airs Wednesday at 10 p.m. EST, right after its progenitor), Whitaker plays Special Agent Sam Cooper, who heads up an elite team of agents within the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit, charged with capturing the nation's most nefarious criminals (or at least some of the bad guys the other show doesn't nab). The new CBS series follows a tried-and-true storytelling formula. But Whitaker, who says he signed on early in the development process and helped shape his role, sees "Suspect Behavior" as a character study as much as a procedural.

CHENNAI: Mahindra & Mahindra's much-awaited debut in the US with its light pick-up truck, TR40 , has faced a marketing setback with the vehicle fetching American fuel economy rating of 19 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city and 21 on highways. That's considerably lower than the 30 mpg that the company had reportedly promised its retailers and more or less on a par with established models in the market like the Toyota Tacoma and Ford F 150.

The fuel economy setback comes nearly a year after M&M's US dealer Global Vehicles took the Indian company to court in Atlanta over what it claimed were delays in the launch of the vehicle. M&M officials said the fuel economy stats look worse due to a new method of calculating the mileage used by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). "EPA has certified the Mahindra vehicle as on date for highway fuel economy (for labelling purposes) at 21 mpg, due to the changes in the calculation procedures adopted by EPA for fuel economy label declaration from Model Year-2008 and more recently with 5-cycle method from model year 2011 onwards," said an M&M spokesperson. However, the overall range fares much better. "For the CAFE (corporate average fuel economy), the city fuel economy certified by EPA is 23.6 mpg, whereas highway fuel economy certified is 30.5 mpg," he addedsaid the spokesperson.

NEW DELHI: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Friday asked the central government to abolish all the schemes it sponsors and confine itself to broad policy complemented with technical and financial support to states, setting the tone for a radical shift in India's economic policy. "The Centre needs to trust the states and confine itself to broad policymaking," said Kumar, credited with returning governance and growth to India's poorest state, at the Economic Times Roundtable for Combating Food Inflation that focussed on tapping the farm potential of eastern India.

The nearly hundred schemes that more than 25 central ministries and departments oversee are the showpiece of the United Progressive Alliance government's development and pro-poor credentials. The call for decentralised planning is equally significant because centralised planning has been one of the cornerstones of India's socialist economy. The large number of centrally-sponsored schemes adds to the confusion in their implementation, said Kumar said at the event that discussed concerted efforts to boost farm produce in eastern India.

Krishna told the secretary that India would be ready and willing depending on the approach Egypt and other friendly countries made on this matter over the next few weeks. The song peaked at No. 4 on the Hot 100 chart and is the cast's best-seller and highest-charter. Two of the songs the cast will compete with are ones they've covered. "It's really weird because these are people who have actually helped the show," 24-year-old Riley said of the Train tune and Paramore's "The Only Exception." "There's such a convergence between some of the songs that are nominated and some of the songs that are performed on `Glee,'" said Glen Brunman, a consultant for Columbia Records who works as the A&R (Artist & Repertoire) for the "Glee" music releases. Brunman is referring to songs that are record of the year nominees, most of which have been covered on the show, like Cee Lo Green's "Forget You," which was performed by Gwyneth Paltrow — who, by the way, will perform the song with Green on Sunday's telecast.

Such measures would protect domestic industry in the shortterm , but would hit foreign investment and innovation in the longer term, Locke told the apex software industry association, Nasscom, on Friday. Describing the partnership between the two countries a "partnership of equals," he said, "To realise the full potential of our economic co-operation , we hope India will address concerns of foreign businesses about India's business environment." "While tariffs have come down, there remain aspects like 19% levy on civil aviation aircraft and 26% on medical devices. There are other non-tariff barriers like mandatory technology transfer requirement on telecom equipment, limited FDI in key sectors and inadequate IP protection," he said.

The US today said that even though India has brought down tariffs, trade barriers still exist, which explains its low ranking on the World Bank’s ‘Ease of Doing Business’ report. “When there are not outright tariffs, there are other non-tariff barriers that limit trade and investment including limits on FDI in key sectors, inadequate protection of IPRs and mandatory technology transfer requirements for telecom companies,” visiting US commerce secretary Gary Locke said at a CII function here. He said that the main challenges facing India-US business relations include concerns on transparency of process of doing business, protection of intellectual property rights and implementation of IPR rules along with non-tariff barriers.

WASHINGTON: The United States' drive to create jobs at home under economic pressure has trumped its sanctions regime. In a clear sign that the technology denial strategy towards India is drawing to a close, US commerce secretary Gary Locke will visit Indian Space Research Organization ( ISRO ), the Department of Atomic Energy, and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India during his visit to India next week in an effort to drive up American exports and signal closer strategic ties with India.

Locke will also hold a town hall style event with students focused on innovation and the knowledge economy at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and visit the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) facilities in Bangalore "to see firsthand how US partnerships with HAL are contributing to India's aviation industry and generating high value jobs in both countries," the US commerce department and The White House announced in a statement detailing his schedule in India. All these entities had suffered in some way under a US technology denial regime that stretched back decades, but it was particularly severe in the immediate months after India's nuclear tests in 1998, when the so-called "non-proliferation ayatollahs" ( a term coined by the late K.Subrahmanyam) were rampant in Washington DC.
