NEW DELHI: More wrangling is in store over the civil liability for nuclear damage bill after the government again seemed inclined to dilute the suppliers’ liability. Earlier, a move to effect surreptitious changes in the standing committee’s report was exposed — page 30 of the report was actually scored out with a pen and another stapled in its place.

The government said it had no role to play in what had transpired while committee chairman Subbirami Reddy claimed the committee had sanctioned the alteration. Panel members claimed otherwise and pointed to the proceedings of the committee for proof.

Critics of the bill have been arguing that it had been structured to protect interests of US suppliers, a charge denied by the government. The government has argued it has sought to pin down liability irrevocably on the operator alone who could after settling claims of victims seek damages from a supplier at fault.
