President Barack Obama is to stop new oil drilling off the US coast for six months following the Gulf of Mexico disaster.

He said planned exploration off Alaska and Virginia would be suspended along with 33 wells being drilled in the Gulf. Mr Obama, who was responding to criticism that he had been slow to act, also announced new safety measures during a Press conference at the White House. In another move, he accused the oil industry of "cosy and corrupt" links to regulators.
