The Indian government said Tuesday it will not allow a US-flagged ship to be dismantled at a shipyard in the western state of Gujarat after a team of experts found toxic and radioactive material on board the vessel.
The federal government ordered the Gujarat government not to allow the aged American cruise liner Platinum II to berth. They said technical experts examined the ship and found evidence of asbestos and some radioactive substances in the hull. Authorities also ordered Gujarat maritime authorities to check reports that the ship was traveling with fake registration papers.
